Chapter 1

Maureen Crawford sipped her glass of wine and admired the small gathering of friends who had come together to celebrate her 30th birthday. They were a diverse sampling of women, from her old law school professor to her secretary to her best friend and half-a-dozen more.

They were frantically placing their lunch order, pestering the poor waitress as Maureen sipped her wine and enjoyed the brief respite from her duties as a full-time lawyer and overtime working mother. For once she had a day off from both, as her birthday fell on a Saturday and her kindly old neighbor, Mrs. Winterbottom, offered to watch Maureen’s beautiful daughter, Sasha, for as long as she wanted.

“Okay, okay,” said her best friend and loyal confidante Kate Templeton, turning to her with a gift bag in hand. “Now that we’ve given our lunch order, we can return our attention to what really matters: presents!”

“What could this be?” Maureen asked as she sorted through tissue and glitter to drag out a pair of soft and comfy leopard print… slippers?

“For when you’re working late and just want to kick off your heels,” explained Sabrina Sanchez, a fellow lawyer from the firm where Maureen worked doing corporate law for some of Atlanta’s biggest companies.

“I love them,” Maureen said, knowing she’d be using them in the coming weeks as she tried to settle the current software copyright case she was in the midst of. “They’re just what I—”

Maureen paused as she spotted a familiar face at the hostess stand across the bustling restaurant. It was mid-afternoon on a Saturday and Cabernet, the funky bistro she’d chosen for lunch was hopping. And yet, somehow, there was room for one more guest. Make that, one more unwanted guest.

“Maureen?” Sabrina asked. “Is everything okay?”

Maureen fixed a smile on her face and nodded. “It’s perfect,” she said, putting the slippers back in the bag and standing abruptly. “I just… I need to… can you all excuse me for a moment?”

There were murmurs and a few chuckles as Maureen, uncharacteristically flustered, stood from the table and strode toward the hostess stand. “Spencer?” she asked of the handsome young man standing, red-faced, as he waited in line. “How… how have you been?”

“Maureen,” he said. “Happy birthday!”

“Thanks,” she said, grabbing his elbow and gently guiding him toward the little alcove just off the restaurant’s funky tiled entrance. “What… what are you doing here?”

“I… I brought you this,” he said, handing her a small gift box.

She paused, touched by the gesture. “But… how did you know I’d be here?” she asked.

He laughed, avoiding her eyes. “I just wanted to stop by and give you that,” he said, turning around to leave.

“Wait,” she said, forcing herself to be generous. “Don’t… don’t go yet.”

“Really?” he asked, arching one dirty blond eyebrow. His hair was shorter than she remembered it, cut so close to his head it was little more than stubble. It fit his ruggedly athletic look and, today, set off the black turtleneck that hugged his long, slim frame.
